With generous support from Breathe Healing, Pride Counseling, Fordham Law, and many generous community members, I had the honor of hosting the first Black Fantastic. The space was designed to be a catalyst for joy and healing in the Black community with presentations and performance from Black artists, healers and innovators in Tacoma. We began with an opening blessing by Annie Jones-Barnes and flutist Desiree Finch. We continued to ground the space with a beautiful water meditation from Jennifer Moore of EmitOneLight. Folks participated in interactive healing stations, and listened intently to the powerful words of poets Adriane Wilson and Elijah Mu'ied.
My favorite part of the evening was offering deliberate thanks and honor to Black elders, Black men, and Black LGBTQ attendees - for their persistence, their defiance of a world that tries to deny their dignity, for their undeniable beauty.
I pray I'll have the opportunity to help hold another space that to nourish us on our own terms. It was indeed fantastic.
